Christmas Traditions are Winter Solstice Traditions

By Leon Priz

Did you know that Winter solstice traditions are remarkably similar around the world? And did you know that most of our Christmas traditions come from those winter solstice traditions? In this article, we shall explore the various winter solstice traditions around the world.

Winter begins with the winter solstice, on the 22nd day of December in the Northern hemisphere, the day when the sun is lowest in the sky and daylight is shortest. The word "solstice" is a compound word from Latin meaning "Sun stands [still]." Starting on December 22, and lasting three days, the sun literally stands still from our perspective. Then, on December 25, it starts to rise higher in the sky, as if it had been born again. That is why Christmas is on December 25. Since the sun is the literal light of the world, and since the Christ was the metaphorical light of the world, it seemed appropriate to the founders of Christianity to set Christ's birthday on that auspicious day.

Almost every culture has had a winter solstice tradition. My personal favorite winter solstice tradition is the Mongolian tradition. So, let's start with that one. Mongolians call the winter solstice the Uvliin Toil. Uvliin means winter's; and Toil means both (a) climax; and (b) pole. Interestingly, Toilakh means to be at the end of one's rope, to become completely exhausted. To me it signifies a double entendre: The sun has reached the end of its rope, and it is exhausted from its work.

Herbology in Wicca

By Harlan Kilstein

Herbology is the mastery of combining herbs to either heal or be used for magick. Witches in the old days have always been synonymous to healers. They are usually the members of a village that know what plants to use for healing and curing diseases. A lot of Wiccans, even Cowans are starting to practice the use of herbal plants as medicine for certain ailments.

There was a decline in the use of medicine when people started patronizing synthetic laboratory made medicines. People found it more convenient to go to the drugstore instead of rummaging through the forest to look for herbal medicine. But recent evidence shows that medicine can only help the body to heal at a certain extent. Moreover, dependency to medicines has morphed itself to substance abuse or drug addiction. A classic example would be pain-killer dependency. People experiencing chronic pain tend to pop painkillers even when the pain symptoms are not felt by the body. This messes up the response of the body to pain, and compromises the whole well-being of an individual.

Frankincense and Myrrh

Details

hough both frankincense and myrrh tend to bring up certain religious connotations to the western mind, they have been in active use as magical incenses, ritual tools and for their healing properties since at least 1500bc. Resin incenses are the top of the line in incense burning. Using incense charcoal as a base, you can release the intense fragrance of these fine resin granules -- without the dilution or alteration of scent caused by a burning base or the fixatives typical in man-made stick or cone incense. Frankincense Tears are known for their use in consecration, meditation, protection and purifying. Myrrh is known for: Protection, purification, healing and magical potency. Both are known for their use as a sacred tool in many cultures. 1.5 oz.

Christmas Is for Pagan Worship Not for Christians

By James R Stearns

The bible tells us the devil has deceived the whole world, and one of his dominating deceptions comes through the celebrating of Christmas. Most of the people called Christians accept Christmas as the day Jesus was born without doing any research or referring to the bible to see if this CLAIM is really true. I have found it to be a fact that people who attend church believe in what their Pastor says even if the bible makes no reference or there is no scripture to confirm it.

Where Did Christmas Come From?

Today, people in Western-based cultures refer to December 25 as "Christmas." However, a look into the origins of Christmas reveals its Pagan roots. Emperor Aurelian established December 25 as the birthday of the "Invincible Sun" in the third century as part of the Roman Winter Solstice celebrations. Christmas customs are an evolution from times long before the Christian period -- a descent from seasonal, pagan, religious, and national practices, hedged about with legend and tradition.

Their seasonal connections with the pagan feasts of the winter solstice relate them to ancient times, when many of the earth's inhabitants were sun worshipers. As the superstitious pagans observed the sun gradually moving south in the heavens and the days growing shorter, they believed the sun was departing never to return. To encourage the sun's return north (i.e., to give the winter sun god strength and to bring him back to life again), the sun gods were worshiped with elaborate rituals and ceremonies, including the building of massive bonfires, decorating with notable evergreen plants such as holly, ivy, and mistletoe, and making representations of summer birds as house decorations.

The winter solstice, then, was the shortest day of the year, when the sun seemingly stood still in the southern sky. Observing the slowdown in the sun's southward movement, and its stop, the heathen believed that their petitions to it had been successful. A time of unrestrained rejoicing broke out, with revelry, drinking, and gluttonous feasts. Then, when the pagans observed the sun moving again northward, and a week later could determine that the days were growing longer, a new year was proclaimed. This start of the solar year is a celebration of Light and the rebirth of the Sun. In old Europe, it was known as Yule, from the Norse, Jul, meaning wheel.

Christmas Is Not God's Holy Day: It Is A Culmination Of Pagan Practices

By Clarence Wilson

Christmas Is The Most Celebrated Holiday In Christianity. Some Consider It The Most 'Holy' Day Of The Year.

The exaltation of Christmas is in itself a travesty. Most historians, and Christian scholars know that Jesus was not born on December 25th. They realize that his birth date was probably in the fall. This is backed up by circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth.

People knowingly follow a false date - set aside to exalt Jesus. Not only is the date a fraud, but also so are the practices. Many manmade traditions have been mixed in with the worship of God. This is like mixing 'dung with balsam'.

The majority of the activities associated with Christmas have no relationship to Jesus. Sure there is an adopted religious (paganish) Nativity scene about Christ. But there are many more adopted pagan customs that are totally unrelated.

Christmas originated in Rome in the 4th century. The tradition came after the Council of Nicaea met in 325 C.E. For kingdom unification, the Council adopted the idea that Jesus was God. Christmas was a Christian substitute for the pagan celebration of winter solstice.

Simple Candle Magick - How it Can Help You Get What You Need

By

Did you know that candles are used for more than just creating atmosphere or revealing your age on birthday cakes? Since candles are intrinsically connected to the four elements of nature (the candle is of an earthen base; the lit wick creates smoke in the air and fire as well; the melted wax pools like water), they have long been used for magickal purposes. Anyone can avail themselves of the gifts candles offer -- all that is required is the presence of a genuine need, a candle, a lighter (gas and flint), a quiet place in which to work, clarity of mind and body, an understanding and acceptance of the mysterious workings of energy and a little bit of information, which follows.

Before engaging a candle, be sure that your intent does not involve manipulation of others (like aiming a 'love' candle at a specific person). Also be sure that your need is a genuine one and does not spring from anything self-serving, which is to say that wanting something is not the same thing as needing something. Of equal import is the consideration of unanticipated boomerang effects -- could your need present difficulty or harm for you or someone else? If your need is clearly non-invasive and none of these warnings apply, then the magick can begin. Here are the simple steps involved in manifesting through simple candle magick.

New to Paganism and Wicca? Here Are a Few Tips

By Kelly Kiley

Pagan, which once meant country dweller, is now coined as the term for a spirituality that is not one of the Big three monotheistic faiths of Christianity, Islam or Judaism. Many folks use Paganism as an umbrella term for many earth-based, or earth honoring spiritual paths. To further break it down many refer to Paganism as what ancient Pre-Christian people practiced, and refer to what is practiced today as Neo-Paganism. Wicca is just one of the many Pagan faiths out there. Pagans refer to themselves as many different things such as Wiccan, Asatru, Celtic, Hellenic, or Roman Re-constructionist, Heathen, Witch, Traditional Witch, Green Witch, Elemental Witch, Pantheist, Polytheist, or even Just Pagan.

I am very interested in learning about Wicca, Witchcraft and Paganism....Now what do I do?

If you are interested in the subject and want to learn more, read as much information from as many different sources as you can. Never take any one teaching or opinion on the subject as set in stone, and the one true way. You will find that many people say that traditional coven taught and lineage based Wicca is the only way to go, and you will find others that think it's perfectly acceptable to learn and practice Wicca in a solitary fashion. All these different schools of thought can be daunting and confusing at first. Do not worry, and take your time. Get educated and come to your own conclusions about what you learn. Much information about Paganism and Wicca is based on scholarship and history, but much of what you read will also be based on opinion, beliefs, and guesses about what our ancestors actually did.
